The eMarketing Guru's Story

Hello, I am Roy Swanson, the e-Marketing Guru. Internet Marketing Consultant.  Like most gurus, you've never heard of me.  That's because I have worked tirelessly in the background for others during my entire career in marketing and sales.  I love what I do, and to me there is no greater thrill than helping a business grow.

I did not set out to become a guru. I became a guru through direct experience.  Twenty-five years' worth.  I began by helping local retailers in a small city in upstate New York.  I wrote and designed their newspaper advertising.  Working on straight commission, I learned very quickly how to get customers in the door.

I continued my career in publishing, working for several years at Rodale Press (Prevention and Men's Health magazines), The Taunton Press (Fine Woodworking and Fine Cooking magazines), and finally Reader's Digest (the worlds largest magazine).  In the 1980's, the publishing industry was the major driver in the evolution of the science of direct-mail and direct-response marketing.  And so I learned, along with the industry, all the disciplines that are now the cornerstones of online marketing.  Along the way, I launched more than a few magazines, books, and videos.

In 1996 I moved online.  Netscape and Amazon were both brand new companies -- less than a year old -- it's hard to believe that the eCommerce era is only just ten years old!  I began by taking The Taunton Press online.  I created an online book store.  In those days, the only things people bought online were books and computers.  The site was very successful, running at a profit by the second year.

I then went to work at ReadersDigest.com, the Web site for the world's largest magazine.  It was a huge task to create a Web site that could be replicated around the world in dozens of countries.  The Digest sells books, magazines, videos, music, financial services, and many other products.  The new site tripled the online business immediately and took off from there.

In 2001, I decided to help start a whole new industry:  eLearning.  I joined eCornell, Inc., the for-profit, online learning subsidiary of my alma mater, Cornell University.  The University of Phoenix was just getting noticed, and it was clear to me that online learning would be a huge phenomenon.  It was a true test of everything I had learned about building online businesses.  Working professionals pay thousands of dollars to take courses online -- it's a high-stakes marketing proposition.  Thanks to the improved climate in eMarketing (especially paid search and email marketing), we were able to build a very successful business in just two years.

In 2004, I took up the life of an internet marketing consultant, the eMarketing Guru, helping startups and small businesses achieve success online.  Among others, I have helped a financial services site, an eLearning startup, and a long running Yahoo! Store retailer pull out of a sales slump.  Doing business online is only getting better.  As the Internet becomes embedded in every facet of daily life, the potentials are increasingly unlimited.  I would be happy to discuss with you how I can help your online business grow.
